A style of piano playing called Ragtime first captured the African American communities of St. Louis and New Orleans in the early 20th Century, peaking in popularity between 1897 and 1918. Ragtime’s distinctive characteristic is its syncopated, or “ragged”, rhythm.

In 2000 & 2001 I traveled throughout Cuba to service, repair and teach reconditioning of pianos at a taller (shop) on the campus of the National Academy of the Fine Arts in Havana. The group I worked with included piano tuners/technicians from the US, Germany & France.

While listening to American Masters’ documentary the eve of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, I saw an interview with Bobby Short. Bobby was the quintessential cabaret pianist & vocalist — especially noted for his sparkling tongue-in-cheek renditions of Cole Porter.
